La Cima Cars

While reaching the Casino del Cars is straightforward, the ascent to Cima Cars follows a trail that is not very well marked at first and then, on the final stretch, a grassy ridge with no trails or trail markers. There are no technical difficulties, only challenges with navigation.

A truly rewarding climb that, on clear days, offers breathtaking views: from the nearby Marguareis to the more distant peaks of the Gesso Valley, all the way to the far-off snow-capped summits of the Alps, which rise above the plain.

Description

To the right of the Pian Marchisio Forest Road (elevation 1506 m), the narrow trail climbs steeply through grass and shrubs. A long, gentler uphill traverse leads into a small beech grove. Upon exiting the woods, you reach a small plateau, where the climb resumes steeply through pasture slopes, with few turns, on the right bank of a small watershed. This leads to the panoramic hilltop where the privately owned Comino Mountain Hut stands (1797 m, 0:50 hours from the fork at 1506 m).
The trail now merges with the numerous tracks left by grazing animals: follow the grassy ridge roughly upward to the Casino del Cars pasture saddle (1864 m, 0:10 hours from the Comino Mountain Hut), between the Ellero and Pesio valleys.
Among the many branches, take the one on the left: cross the meadow heading south until you reach the more obvious trail, which runs along the rock face. Gain elevation, with a few tight turns, until you reach another grassy saddle. Cross it on level ground, then turn south into a narrow valley. The trail disappears at times among the low vegetation: ignore a trail to the left leading to Cima Cars, then turn sharply northwest and, following a wide ledge, reach an unnamed but very scenic pass.
A flat stretch heading southwest takes you to the western spur of Cima Cars, which marks the boundary of the upper Serpentera Valley. Here, be sure to leave the marked trail, which continues slightly downhill toward Colletto Pellerina, and turn left (east).
Climb up the spur through meadows and rhododendrons, with no trail or trail markers of any kind. Head for the saddle to the left (northwest) of the summit, where a distinct trail reappears. Following it to the right, you’ll soon reach the summit of Cima Cars (2217 m, 1 hour 20 minutes from Casino del Cars).

Access and parking

From Villanova Mondovì, drive up the Ellero Valley to Roccaforte Mondovì. Then continue left toward Rastello, where you’ll take the “Pian Marchisio forest road.” The road, which is paved in some sections and unpaved in others, leads up to an elevation of 1,506 (immediately after two consecutive hairpin turns); vehicles with high ground clearance are recommended. There is a small pull-off beside the road with space for two or three cars.
